CIS Virtualizes Bank Branches
About CIS Eletrônica
With over 40 years in the technology sector, CIS provides solution equipment, backed by a comprehensive technical assistance network, for the financial sector, commercial automation, and government. They are a market leader in biometric sensors and banking service equipment, and have a 3500 m2 industrial complex in the Manaus Free Zone and offices in São Paulo.
Thanks to their innovative products and specialized engineering, they are considered a pioneer in the banking industry in various areas, mobile devices – POS/PINPAD – Mobile Payment, as well as in electronic payment methods and financial transactions (EFT).
CIS often undertakes major projects in Brazil, introducing new technologies for automating business and physical access processes. They utilize components like magnetic and barcode card readers, smartcard readers, and biometric scanners.
Challenge
CIS‘s clients, particularly the banking institutions in Brazil, rely on an extensive ecosystem of information systems. This consists of a wide range of peripherals and connectivity infrastructures that need to operate together due to existing requirements, respecting strict parameters of security, reliability, and performance, inherent to the financial sector.
A significant challenge for these institutions is conceptualizing the “Virtual Banking Branch”. That is, to provide systems that work together with various peripherals, such as PinPads, Magnetic Card Readers, and Finger Prints, among others, anywhere, outside of a traditional branch structure, with closed and secure communication. This provides employees with complete mobility, enabling them to work from home, service points, or even directly at the client’s premises.
Currently, platforms require dedicated equipment (desktop) with exclusively installed and configured peripherals, making their pratical movement impossible due to the high costs involved in their lifecycle (operation, maintenance, support, and repair). Additionally, the network and management infrastructure of this computational park is another challenge, given that users must operate with different technological platforms.
IT teams in the banking industry are looking for a platform that meets the following requirements:providing agile access, regardless of equipment and user’s location; and allowing unified and centralized management of systems, equipment and peripherals. The challenge is to bring to market an effective solution, a technological platform fulfilling these requirements where CIS’s equipment and peripherals will be approved and function natively.
Solution
CIS employed an Application Virtualization Platform, based on the Enterprise Open Workspace (EOW) product. EOW virtualized various peripherals and equipment using Integration SDK technologies, ensuring both portability and security. And with Application Streaming technology, agile access to banking applications, regardless of the equipment and users’ location, was achieved.
The environment included a Geographic Balancer (DSM) and took advantage of the product’s Architectural Modularity, which doesn’t require any additional licensing for High Availability/Disaster Recovery features and additional locations.
Additionally, despite a fully distributed and replicated infrastructure, CIS also took advantage of the EOW architecture which focuses on Lean Components to reduce computational requirements and minimize costs.
Finally, to ensure maximum security and privacy when accessing the platform, CIS took advantage of EOW’s Integrated TLS VPN and Advanced Authentication mechanisms. Guided by an Untrusted End Devices paradigm, these ensure that potential user device security challenges do not have the capacity to compromise important banking business applications and information.

Benefits
- Modernization of peripherals and applications, decoupling them from the executing Operating System (Windows, Linux, Mainframe).
- Integration procedures and equipment certified and approved according to current legislation.
- Availability of peripherals and applications from anywhere, with any equipment, including via 4G and 5G.
- Distributed architecture, with no single points of failure, meets application criticality requirements with availability greater than 99.99%.
- No additional costs or fees for High Availability/Disaster Recovery components or features, including redundant geographical load balancers.
- Over 75% decrease in maintenance and application support costs. With no locally installed business applications, it’s possible to reduce or even eliminate various task, incident, and problem topologies, especially those that required travel/visits to update or repair hardware and software.
- Business applications are located in a uniform and centralized computing environment, drastically reducing the cost of management and antivirus, antimalware, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Over 50% increase in application performance and, consequently, operator productivity, due to the ability to use the computational capacity of the client’s Datacenters to run business applications.
